About JDCS
We are a Jersey society whose primary objective is to help children and young adults with hearing difficulties.
We provide a wide range of support, equipment and information for parents and families. This includes newsletters and regular social events. We facilitate visits to the UK for parent days and other deaf related programmes and feed back information to families on developments. We also help to foster communication among local families and so help them to build up a network of support. We do our best to provide help with any deaf related issue if asked and offer support to schools, the hospital and the hearing resource centre.
We work with the UK National Deaf Children’s Society (NDCS) and have a dedicated liaison officer who regularly visits us.We also have local parents who are trained family supporters and who provide support and information to parents and carers of deaf children. They help parents to navigate the maze of information available and share knowledge of local services. Being parents of deaf children themselves, they have first hand experience of what it is like for families when babies and children are identified as hard of hearing or deaf. This experience enables them to offer enormous help with any concerns and questions parents may have.
We have parents and children who wear hearing aids or cochlear implants; our language includes British Sign Language (BSL) and total communication.
We use the term ‘deaf’ to cover all types of hearing loss, including temporary loss such as glue ear. The term ‘hearing aid’ is used to include all types of hearing aids, including cochlear implants.
The society is open to anyone and costs just £1 a year.
