The Jersey Society for Deaf Children and Young Adults, and the Jersey Society for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing are joining a national week long event called ‘Look at Me’, due to run from 1 – 7 May which aims to improve social inclusion for those in our community with hearing difficulties, by understanding their needs and daily challenges.
We are running an exhibition at St Pauls centre from Thursdy to Saturday which will include workshops specifically designed for people who work with the general public. The workshops will explain sign language, lip reading and other tactics that can be used to communicate with the deaf, deafened, deafblind and hard of hearing. They offer a taste of the kind of courses available locally.
A time-table of workshops, which last no longer than 60 minutes, is available for download. If you would like to attend complete and return the attached booking form.
Secondly, Friday 5 May will be Jersey’s ‘Look at me’ day.We are encouraging people to wear bright colours, the message being that the hearing impaired need to be able to see your face when you communicate with them as they read lips and facial expressions.By sponsoring a dress down day you will be helping us to spread the word and reinforce this point.
We are printing posters and balloons to distribute to supporting companies. Please email andrew@jdcs.org.je if you would like a supply to display.
Finally a big thank you the the JEC, the Co-op and Vision advertising for their support and making Look at me week 2006 possible.
Thank you for taking the time to read this and in anticipation of any support that you are able to offer.
